Located in the eastern part of Zhenjiang, near the Yangtze River, Chui Mountain is famous for its natural scenery, with flourishing woods and tall bamboo bushes, flowers and birds, and bubbling spring water. There are 36 cliffs and 72 caves, as well as Chui Mountain Tower standing on the top of the main peak, Xinlin Temple with Thousand Buddha Building halfway up the mountain, Shaolong Temple hidden under Wufeng Mountain, and ancient fort guarding the Yangtze River. These 36 cliffs and 72 steep slopes on the mountain make the scene different each step you walk, while Bao’en Tower, the first tower of the Yangtze River, soars into the sky.
Chui Mountain boasting beautiful hills and waters is an ideal place for Buddhist spiritual practice. In its heyday, there were dozens of Buddhist nunneries here. At present, Xinlin Temple, Dongxia Temple, Longshao Temple and Lengyan Temple are full of prayers and believers all the year round.
Because of the strategical location that guards the Yangtze River, Chui Mountain has been a place of strategic importance for military strategists since ancient times. In Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), Zhenhai Navy was set up here, and in Song Dynasty (AD 960-1279), Chui Mountain Stronghold was established here. Han Shizhong fought against the Jin soldiers here and besieged Jin Wushu’s army in Huangtiandang, so that the Jin soldiers dared not to invade China in the Southern Song Dynasty again.
Chui Mountain has beautiful scenery, pleasant climate, abundant natural resources and long history of food culture. Especially in Sanjiangying of the Yangtze River at the foot of Chui Mountain, the shad, saury and puffer there can be described as the best in the Yangtze River. The braised mutton and ricefield eel soup in Dongxiang region are well-known delicacy for complicated processing and exquisite cooking.
